Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been historically understood to be a childhood disorder, that affects young children (0 – 17 years old) which can sometimes persist into adulthood. The demand for Adult ADHD treatment has risen all over the world, which primary health service systems were not historically designed to cater for. At Brevity Clinic, we approach Adult ADHD in a streamlined way, outlined below:

ADHD Pathway 1:

ADHD is a highly co-existing condition. This means that someone can have ADHD symptoms and also have other mental health conditions that are equally debilitating and affecting the optimal function of the person. Hence, an initial assessment is required to identify the main cluster of problems affecting the person and what pathway will be most appropriate.

Pathway 1 involves an initial assessment, which is required to determine if the person suspected to have ADHD symptoms can be interviewed and can be considered for non-stimulant ADHD treatment. This first consultation will be for forty (40) minutes. The main objective of this interview will be to review any co-existing conditions presenting alongside your ADHD symptoms and if you can be fast-tracked or expedited to Pathway 2 or if your other co-occurring symptoms require further investigation. In most cases where co-existing conditions are detected, Brevity Clinic will need to determine your eligibility for Pathway 1 treatment or if any other management options are appropriate.

ADHD Pathway 2:

Pathway 2 is specific for those patients that definitely require stimulant ADHD medication or whose initial presentations, clearly hallmarks the need to fast-track to this Pathway from initial consultation. For these cohort, Brevity Clinic works in conjunction with a Consultant Psychiatrist and a Medicare Item 291 Referral can be executed to fast-track the process. If a Medicare Item 291 Referral Report is received and confirms the diagnosis of ADHD, an application for a Permit is then lodged with the Department of Poisons Regulation for approval. After Permit Approval, you will be booked in for a treatment appointment and then start your ADHD stimulant medication.

Please Note: All cases will be assessed on a case-by-case basis (i.e. personal circumstances).

Please also note: there are statutory requirements (from the Department of Health) to have a 6 month point & 12 month point statutory review with the confirming psychiatrist after commencing treatment
